98 days.

Postby don taylor » Tue May 27, 2014 4:49 am

I'm seeing tons of geese, tons of little ones. The local ponds have ducks.

What I'm really searching for are bands. I'm not finding any on any local flocks. None. The few flocks that had them last year, that I never scored on, are all without those birds now.

98 days until the season starts up. It should be a good one, from the looks of it.

Was talking to a Farmer today who had just finished planting his corn. I ask him how far behind schedule his corn planting is compared to the last 2 years. He said about 1 month behind.
Explained to him how I like to goose hunt over cut cornfields but the season starts September 1st. He doubted that any corn will be cut for silage by that time.
Everything is behind schedule so far this Spring.

Saw a hen mallard with one duckling yesterday. Some nests got hurt more than others as usual. In know you are talking about canadas and they seem to be doing well to in this part of the state. The opening day can't come soon enough!
As for the corn being planted late, that's not a good thing to me anyway.

If they're not in corn, they'll be somewhere else. They have to eat. Most of the corn I hunt is left standing well into October or later. I guess if you hunt some kind of sweet corn, that would matter. Most of the stuff around here is dent corn for livestock. At least where I hunt. They'll be in beans, grass or I'll find them at a loaf spot at 11 am hanging out.

I need new waders. Again.

Not sure if you're looking for anything in particular, Don, and I think they were mostly smaller foot sizes but the last time I was in Hamburg I saw at least 4-5 sets of waders in the bargain cave. All were max4, can't recall the weight either but they've been hanging out there the past two times that I've been within a month now.

Found this on another site some really good prices on waders. The Breakroom has waders 60% off. Sign up to get notified of the deals. Put BREAKER10 in the coupon code and get an extra $10 off if it is your first order.

My last two pair were deals, this time I'm buying exactly what I want. Not getting a proper fitting wader I think was part of why they failed me. I'm going to Cabela's with a credit card and two old pair in hand to show them. I've heard of people getting them prorated or something and getting a deal on new ones. These last waist waders lasted 1 season. It's not even the neoprene, , it's the boot.

I've got a nice piece of micarta at Echo right now, I'm getting an XLT made. I sent some of this neat green material off to riceland for a buddy who lives in Italy. He had this made.

I've sold off a large part of my collection and I'm slowly adding one off calls with the proceeds.

Go with the breathable waders I wear them all year round I can normally get 3-5 years out of them compared to the 2 I get out of neoprene just buy some good long underwear. I'm seeing a lot a geese and a few ducks in the erie area which is normal for where I'm looking. This year I'm rigging up a new to me 16' duck boat so birds beware!! The season can't get here soon enough!!

I know you posted this a whole back but I have been seeing a lot of ducks and geese. I finally have a summer that I actually knocked out some projects for the fall instead of waiting until the last week of August to quick get everything done. I have had the chance to run out to my one blind on the Susquehanna and have seen a ton of ducks and ducklings. The geese seem to be bunching up in more than the usual numbers? Anyone else notice this? Here in Harrisburg there are a few place that, you can't hunt BUT, accumulate a bunch if geese at some point. The Camp Hill Prison was absolutely loaded the other day. I am hoping this a a good sign for early season.

Geese are everywhere here in Lawrence. They're feasting on grass; good sign, at least for me.
Ducks-average. As usual on Neshannock Creek. Got to catch 'em going upstream during the season. Haven't been to Moraine yet.

Haven't had a chance to check my blind sites on the river yet, but I hope early season will yield good results with all the ducks you said are around. The geese as usual starting to accumulate around the safety zones. Fingers crossed for a good crop of ducks and geese to last us through the early season.

I'm beyond excited for this season to start. I've finally purchased a layout blind which opens up a lot of areas that I've never hunted due to not having proper gear. I'm already putting more miles on the truck scouting and lots of door banging than I did last year. Seems I'm doing alright with obtaining permission this year. A lot of farmers enjoy seeing someone eager to help get rid of some Ground hogs and reward them with permission to hunt geese in the fall.

I hope everyone's ready the itch is getting bad here.

Can't wait, these cooler days/mornings have made it seem a lot more like hunting season than summer! The pup's getting antsy too, I think he can sense it's time...
