Sea Duck Hunting in Mass?

Postby rired » Fri Aug 24, 2012 9:16 pm

Hey guys,

Will be stationed for a few months in Mass, on the north shore, but have gun will travel. Wondered if any of you have any successes hunting sea ducks there? I checked in on the Mass site, but didn't feel much love there, weirdness and paranoia?

Anyway, would love to hear of any good experiences and also a good guide or two?

Not so much love here either eh?
My doctor said drinking heavily can lead to a slow death. I said good, I'm not in any hurry.

If you are near the Boston area launch your boat in Wintrop harbor. Head out of the harbor and you will see a cluster of lslands as you hit the open water. There are lots of sea ducks that frequent this area from October on. Early season there are scoters late season Eiders. Set up on the edge of the lee with a string of decoys ended into windward. Sit on the rocks with good camo and find a safe spot to beach your boat. Keep an eye on your boat on a dropping tide as you can and will get stuck. We always had rollers to put under the boat to roll back to the water. There are freash water ponds on a couple of these islands so you will get some puddle duck shooting. Also lots of giant hares on the islands that you can jump shoot during a lull in the action. This place gets pressure and the sad thing is there will be lots of cripples swimming around. Make sure you have a good boat, when the wind comes up it can be dangerous. Adam Smith is a local guide he can take you but it is a good DIY spot.
