Kentucky Visitors needing advice

Postby mox » Fri Dec 30, 2011 8:18 pm

Hey guys. My wife and I are headed to Charleston first week of February to take one last vacation before the baby gets here in May. I've got a couple things on the list to do/see, but I was hoping to find some advice from you all who know the area better. We're staying Feb. 6-10 at Harbourview Inn. Are there any good local dives? Sites? Hunting stores? Places to birdwatch (waterfowl)?
I posted something similar in the California forum for our honeymoon a couple years ago and got some good feedback so I thought I'd try you all. Thanks!

Too many restaurants to list.

Santee Coastal Reserve and the Cape Romain NWR to the north of Charleston.....about 45 minutes up hwy 17.
Hollings NWR and Bear Island WMA are to the south......about 45 minutes down 17.

Great places to watch ducks and other wintering fowl.

I wont be in town or i would offer to show you around. TONS of great places to eat, lots of shopping in the downtown area. Tons of bars in walking distance of where you're staying. Make sure to check out the sights downtown. there is a lot of cool history there. Its an awesome town, you guys will love it!

The Variety Store has a GREAT breakfast. http://www.varietystorerestaurant.com/

Il Corile Del Re is a good italian restaraunt tucked away on the secluded end of King St. http://www.ilcortiledelre.com/about-us/

Fleet Landing is within walking distance and is prett good for a brunch...http://www.fleetlanding.net/

Take the horse/carriage ride through the historic district and go see Ft. Sumter if your into American history. Very nice.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'm keeping notes so keep the advice coming. \
I think we'll be sight seeing as long as it doesn't require too much walking (wife will be 25 weeks pregnant). Good eats are at the top of the list so far so feel free to list your favorite restaurant whether it be 5 star or hole-in-the-wall.

What kind of weather can we expect then?

The weather is nice. Highs in the 60's most of this week.
You know your hunting in South Carolina when a bunch of ducks fly in and you shot both of them!!

I am sorry to say that we won't be making our trip to Charleston as of today. Thank you guys for all the advice, it will be noted and hopefully used later on sometime. My mother-in-law is having some emergency surgery to remove some cancer doctors found last week, so we're going to be with her instead... Just traded in the plane tickets and got the room refund.

I appreciate it. We made it back to KY Saturday. Surgery went well and all signs of cancer were removed.
My wife is still chompin' at the bit to visit Charleston, so I'll have to save this thread.
