NEWS RELEASE #05-160 Aug 8, 2005 DNR News (803) 734-3950

A Take One Make One Lowcountry deer hunt is scheduled for Oct. 28-29 for individuals permanently confined to a wheelchair.

The Lowcountry chapter of Safari Club International, Nemours Plantation and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will conduct the hunt on several private plantations in Colleton and Beaufort Counties. Applicants will be drawn for the hunt sites and drawing will continue for any alternates. Participants will arrive by 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 and depart after lunch Saturday, Oct. 29. Nemours Plantation is the focal point of the hunt, and supper Friday will be provided along with a light Saturday breakfast and lunch Saturday.

To obtain an application for the Oct. 28-29 Take One Make One hunt, contact DNR Sgt. Lynwood Kearse in Columbia at (803) 734-4011 or (800) 277-4301. The application deadline is Sept. 10. After dinner on Friday, the hunters will head for their motels. A list of local motels offering wheelchair accessible rooms will be supplied. The hunters will make their own reservations and pay for their own rooms. However, if any of the hunters selected for this event are not financially able to pay for their accommodations, some financial assistance will be available.

Safari Club International and DNR will both provide liability coverage for the event. In addition, Kearse will provide waivers of liability prepared by the DNR, which all participants will be required to sign upon arrival.

The Take One Make One program, operated through the DNR Law Enforcement Division, specifically targets youth and young adults who have not experienced a previous shooting or hunting activity, but welcomes any participants. Participants will be paired with volunteer hunting club members and private landowners who sponsor and actively participate in a year-round hunting, fishing, and shooting sports mentorship program.

Participants are required to attend a hunter education course and visit a supervised sport-shooting facility or document a supervised shooting practice session with their mentors. After completion of a hunter education course, participants will be allowed to participate in Take One Make One hunts or DNR-sponsored hunts.
