Had a frustrating morning, flock after flock skirted the dekes, flared out of range, all the frustrating things birds will do. Tried all the fixes as well, moved dekes, added, subtracted, called less, called more etc ...

Whatever it was it kepts two of us to a bird apiece. Was hunting a harvested bean field and there just isn't anything for a hunter to blend into, anything taller than 2" casts a shadow and sticks out like a painted lady in church, can't wait for the corn to come out of the fields.

Great season so far, but a tough day.

They did the samething last night to use, but the ducks came in great. One duck almost landed on my friend when he was in his blind. We ended up getting 9 mallards. I can't believe how they come in when you have a robo duck going. They don't look anyway else when that is going. I was sitting in my blind with the top open and they came right in. Now I love hunting ducks in the field.

Nother hard day for geese skirting the dekes. Still managed to scratch down two, added a limit of ducks and gave the pheasants a break. My poor dog is getting older and the cold temps, wind and rain really took a toll on her Saturday.

I think it was because it was foggy out and they didn't see us, but some did and kept flying. I don't know.

Mallardhunter,

Any luck the last few weekends? Should be a lot of migrators up by you now. My dad and I limited on greenheads out of a cornfield the day after Thanksgiving in Day County. I grew up in Watertown and have a lot of realtives in Webster. Last Sunday, We shot 15 mallards, 1 honker, and 2 snows, at the river. I go to school in Vermillion so besides Day County I do a lot of hunting West of Yankton.

Springfield1

When does the duck and goose season end for NE SD? I think the duck ends real soon but do not know about geese.

Well most of them are heading out now I didn't get anything this last weekend because I was down in Mitchell on Saturday. I think the season for ducks and geese is closed for my area  I am not sure about down by you.

looks good mallard hunter you did well near sand lake.Talked to our buddies near waubay and it was good we hunted when we did. Alot less birds the first part of november and people everywhere banging at them to make sure they left quick. Not like it used to be. Good thing we know how to scout.

we had another great season, only 2 weekends that we didnt limit. but, the same old story-we get respectable ducks-gads,wigeon,teal,ringnecks, buffalo, bluebills, etc(no shovelers, mergansers, or coots), but out of a combined 70 or so ducks(2 guys), only about 9 mallards. what gives?
