No Outsiders Wanted???

Postby Paladin » Fri Nov 05, 2010 3:23 pm

Hello everyone,

So being a South Dakota boy myself, born and raised in Cresbard, I hunted all over South Dakota before I went into the Army back in 1997 and traveled the world. I even went hunting pheasant in South Korea where it cost the locals a butt load to kill 2 pheasants season long. After I got out of the military this year and moved to Kentucky I went home to Cresbard to find out that I couldn't go duck hunting because I wasn't a resident of South Dakota and something about a lottery you have to apply for in July.?.

Can someone tell me what the deuce is that all about??? During pheasant season South Dakota triples in size with hunters, but a someone can't come in a duck hunt.

This is a copy and past from the SD GF&P Website

http://gfp.sd.gov/

Nonresidents

Licenses for most seasons are limited and issued by lottery drawing. Application deadline is July 9.

Licenses of limited-day duration require a start date for hunt before a license will be issued; start date may be changed through GFP License Office prior to the start date; applicants without a start date will have license held if successful in drawing, and may provide start date at any time before season, but please allow ample time for mailing license
See season application information for details.

Licenses for Unit 00B cover most of the state and are valid for 10 consecutive days

Licenses for Unit 00A are for the southeastern corner of the state are valid for the length of the waterfowl seasons in that area

Licenses for Unit 11A are for Bennett County in the southwest and are valid for 10 consecutive days

Licenses for Unit 00Y in the northeast part of the state are valid for 3 consecutive days

Licenses for Unit 00X in the central part of the state are valid on private land only for 3 consecutive days

Early Fall Canada Goose licenses are valid for the length of that season in those counties open to nonresident hunting
Spring Light Goose licenses are valid for the length of that season
South Dakota Migratory Bird Certification is included in waterfowl license
Federal Waterfowl Stamp required (not required for those under age 16)
Youth age 12 (or will turn 12 by Dec. 31) may hunt and have same license requirements as adults

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Ok, got that, read that. WHY don't they let non-residents hunt with out the lottery?? Why a lottery?? If I'm coming from Canada down south I can stop in North Dakota and hunt. I can go to Minnesota and hunt. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and hunt but just driving in and buying a license, but not in South Dakota. WHY! I guess my money is good enough for Pheasant hunting but not Duck or Goose Hunting.

So why can't I just show up a hunt without putting in an application by July??? That is the question.

Because thats the way it is. I personally love the lottery. Almost everyone gets drawn that puts in for it. You know how many hunters there are during pheasant season. Duck hunting would not be very good if you could purchase oos liscenes over the counter. Now you know. So you can apply next year. I believe there are left over priavate land liscenes for oosers in the pierre area.

Most everyone gets one you say. That was not the case this year as only 70 percent got one as the word is out(newspaper articles, magazines). My guess is next year it will even be less then 70 percent.

We have been going over twenty years and never had an issue until the last ten years. We have not been picked several times now and i know former South Dakota residents in the same boat. I also know of people who have been drawn and have not gone for whatever reason, so those licenses go unused. i agree a lottery is needed but the number should and can be increased. The state is complaining that resident numbers are dropping like a rock yet does not want the revenue from out of staters. It also seems messed up a person who grew up in the state cannot even get a license without the lottery system.

So since we did not get drawn this year we went to North Dakota twice and did great. Saw maybe two hunting parties total on the two trips. You just need to pick and area that is not well known and scout. I actually enjoyed these trips just as much as South Dakota and love the fact you get two periods; which is another dumb thing South Dakota does. Why not give the hunters two five day periods instead of one ten day? Most of us are not going to stay for ten days but you can increase revenue if you let people come twice.

This is just my two since but have been told from friends in South Dakota this is all political and some certain sportmans group are the ones who have no interest in giving out anymore licenses.

i like the lottery

keeps the pressure down and allows me more birds.

i told my girlfriend that i would not move out of south dakota because it would ruin my waterfowl eligibility. she has a great job in Iowa but she can stay there without me or move here for me. lol
just trying to learn more

I like the waterfowl lottery. It keeps the pressure down.I specifically moved to South Dakota because of the walleye fishing and waterfowl hunting.
