East TN Migration Watch 05-06 (post duck reports here)

Postby UT Greenhead » Tue Dec 06, 2005 10:47 pm

Here's the place to post duck reports for East TN. There are two rules for posting on this thread.

1) No Questions! This is for posting duck reports, not for asking "Where are the ducks?".

2) Keep Central and West TN reports off this thread.

Thanks,
UTG

Ducks were hear last week but have seemed to of disappeared this week. Small water isn't locked up like last week so that may be part of the problem.

Hunted a little backwater off the TN River on Friday. Real close to the Hwy. 30 bridge.
I didn't see the first dadgum duck anywheres low. Only some high migrators and a couple canadas.

Seen some ducks on the lake today while crappie fishing :pissed: . There weren't any high fliers. Oh the way home I seen several setting on the ponds. 150-200 birds all day. No big numbers.

First Day I have ever been to a WMA and not heard 1 single shot in the morning. Seen about 10 ducks before shooting time and seen probably 5-10 more untill 9am. Most were high except a couple that were just fly bys. There were not responding to calls or anything... So bad day for me in the east..will try again tuesday...

What a difference a day makes. We went this morning and we got 10 ducks and seen alot more. When the weather is right you can still get ducks even when you hunt in ETN. We got 3 drake bluebills, 4 mallards (2 drakes and 2 hens), 1 drake ringneck, and 1 hen goldeneye. This year has been a funny year when you go you either hammer down or you don't fire a shot, no in between.

Their are ducks here boys. Now that the ponds are getting froze over they are hitting the big water. Seen lots of ducks and geese today. 95% were big ducks. Where the divers are......... I don't know? I killed a buffle head and common meganser today. I only seen 25-50 divers all day.

Going backwards again. Seen 200 ducks and that's pushing it. Had a goldeneye come in and after three shots all I got was 3 feathers. Only seen 15 divers and I counted them. This is crazy the creeks, ponds, and the slow parts of the river are frozen. We should be seeing more ducks on the big water.

I went crappie fishing today since it was going to be "hot" and I was in the mood for some fish for supper. I saw about 50 greenies and 200 geese. The greenies were in a place that would be really hard to hunt (100 yard law) but the geese are huntable. I still say their are ducks here but the weather being so warm, they don't have to move around looking for food. Pray for cold weather before the season ends.

Well........to sum it up. It pretty much SUCKED  today. Seen 4 mallards all not interested in our spread and two goldeneyes which were to high to shoot. I don't know what it is but this year I have seen more goldeneyes than I have ever seen. Geese were out in force, but they knew exactly where they wanted to go. I ain't going back till it gets cold again.

Went this morning. Seen some ducks, after I went looking for them. They are setting in every cove around here. Once you run em off they just go find another cove. I set up after I saw 50 ish get up 500 yards from me. Not one duck came back and I waited for 4 hours. I don't know what to do. They are skiddish as all get out. Jump shoot em I guess.

I went looking again thursday and found a hidden honey hole. Flooded timber in the mountains of east TN. Go figure. Divers, puddlers, and geese. I plan to hunt it this coming week so with luck will kill something. There is still ducks here just hidden away in very sucluded ponds with NO pressure. Time is running out for a major cold front to come down and push new birds in. Educated birds are what we have now so expect it to be a hard kill from here on out. If you can find birds this is a good time to test your ability to kill ducks. Calling and spreads must be above average and the hide must be much more detailed. Go with the unconventional spreads. Good luck to all the rest of the season.

I went a few days this week and boy was it tough. The first day we got 1 woodduck. Then nothing the next day. I am going again in the morning so hopefully it will be alot better with this front coming in. I know it does not have cold air with it but you never know what will happen maybe it will make the ducks that are here to want to decoy. This is going to be my last Sat. of the year so maybe I will get lucky.
