Costal decoy spread

Postby SATX duckman » Tue Dec 18, 2012 10:35 pm

Ive been hunting the coast with some success this season. Just wondering about my decoy spread. I have 2 dozen pintail 2 doz redhead doz wigeon doz blue bill doz mallard doz gadwall. Just wondering about set ups to bring them. Been using a wide V shape pointing into the wind. Also been splitting species and creating about a 15 yard landing zone in front of my set up.
Anyone have a particular spread pattern they use and feel like sharing. Im trying to keep it from looking like a big blob of random birds. Thanks for the help.

The three above are good references, but try making the landing hole smaller. Sometimes a large landing hole, especially with redheads, will "un-focus" there set. A tight landing hole will ensure they set tight in front of the blind instead of a scattered set.

Scout and arrange decoys to mimic what you saw while scouting... Hate to break it to yall, but ducks don't always sit in V's or U's or W's!

Yall are overthinking it!!

You are right, they almost never do, but what we are trying to do is narrow the exact spot the group will land to ensure the best opportunity for kill shots.

Every decoy spread should have a kill hole that determines where you want the birds to land, you can accomplish this and still mimic the flock. Even if you throw out someting that looks like an ameba. Just leave a slight "u" (for lack of better terminology) between you and the spread and scatter some singles down shore, up wind ... they'll light betweent he singles or in them and swim to the raft if you let them - obviously, shoot them before they do that.

Well fellas I appreciate all the input. I know its a game of trial and error and refinement. I realize there is no exact science to it and birds will react different just wanted to get some input. Thanks.

Now anyone have any tricks on preventing the rust on my gun. Any sprays or tricks you to prior to getting out into the salt water. I shoot a mossberg 835 as the 3 1/2's really give me reach. I know its not a fancy gun but I still need to make it last.

Powerwasher, air compressor then towel dry.... Spray down with corrosion X inside and out and blow out/ wipe away excess... works for my reels and my guns.
