Is Guadalupe Delta WMA safe to with a dog

Postby Old Man » Wed Dec 19, 2012 9:37 am

I have hunted many times down there in past, but never with a dog. I hunt the Mission Bay Unit.I know that they have gators on the property, but don't know if it is safe to take my dog down there. I have a call into the WMA, but any of yall's advice would be great.

Being that gators are cold blooded, I consider it safe to hunt dogs in areas that you kow gators are present when the outside temp is 50 degrees and falling!!
Make em hate it!!

Lots of people hunt their dogs there. Last I heard, the bio that manages it hunts his dog out there. Buddy swears he saw a 7 footer out there last week.

Just don't shoot the cowbirds...

i asked a similar question on the dog forum. main thing i got from it was biologist say that water temp has more to do with gators feeding than the air temp does. i have also been told that if u stay in shallow enough water that the dog doesnt have to swim u got no problems.

I wouldn't. They hunt gators in the same units we hunt in. Besides, none of it is really deep.

Orly?

I was under the impression that gators often ate things that were on the bank, out of the water, and that to hunt them, you actually hang your bait a couple feet out of the water? How is staying in less than a couple feet of water going to help?

I have been hunting there the last couple weeks with my dog and havent seen a gator. some of the ponds are fairly deep for a dog, so take something to get it out of the water
