Moving to Houston

Postby PAwingshooter » Sat Feb 02, 2013 8:18 am

Hi Everyone,
I just found out last week that I'm being relocated to Houston, TX for work. I started out in Louisiana, and then they moved me north to New Jersey, and Houston is the third stop along the way. I've been fortunate enough to duck hunt in all of the places they have moved me. I don't know how true this is, which is why I figured this forum is the best place to ask the question. Everyone always says "Everything in Texas is private, you have to get a lease." I've always scouted and hunted public land and don't have the slightest clue as to where to begin on finding a lease. So here are my two questions:
1) Is public land really that scarce for waterfowl hunting in Texas?
2) If so, any ideas on where to begin on getting into a lease?

I prefer hunting public land and have a surface drive motor on my boat to help get around, but if a lease is the way to go, I wanted to start looking now.

Thanks for all of the help.

There is plenty of public land to hunt a few hours from Houston if you feel like driving. It can get crowded at times though, but if you can hunt during the week you will usually have the water to yourself. Any more questions shoot me a PM.

Thanks everyone, looks like I won't worry about getting a lease. Looking forward to a fun season in a new part of the country!

Oh and probably not many in PA, but watch out for the gators! There are some pretty good size ones in the area we talked about. I had a 10ft-er swim up into the decoys last weekend, scared us all chit less! :welcome:

I'm looking at houses just north of the city, around Spring or The Woodlands. Thanks for the heads up on the gators, I didn't think I had to worry about them after leaving Louisiana.

Move anywhere north of Louetta and West of I-45 IMO the hood is creeping north. I would look into Magnolia and Conroe also.
