Anything else?

Postby stumpjumper1590 » Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:59 am

What else am I going to need for hunting the coast? So far I have 10 dozen decoys (Pintails, redheads, bwt, gwt, and some old mallards that are gonna get painted, two mojos (they came with some of the deeks), teal call, whistle, a couple of mallard calls, waders and hip boots, a large sled to pull decoys in, blind bag.

If you have hunted the coast and can think of anything else I might need let me know.

Also worst case scenario I will be getting a kayak, best case a boat once I am down there.

THANKS!

What are you going to be hunting out of? Kayak, one of the many public blinds guides have graciously built for you to use, or just sitting down on the ground? If it's the ground could look into a marsh seat to make it a little more comfy and dry.

Rain jack, wind breaker, warm clothes. They all need to be able to be removed quickly, weather can change fast
Invest in some white heafty trash bags, when you see a flock of divers wave one around in the air until they start coming tward you. Little trick i learned a few years ago, its like a magnent for dumb red heads and blue bills. And with pintails flop it around when you first see them then stop.

Time and time...another year worth of scouting, plotting your map.

Just food for thought, you might want to re-think 10dz at once...paddling with 10dz strapped to you would be pretty dang tough.

Alright so lets see what we got!
So I will probably be hunting out of a yak for at least the first season, however I don't plan on hunting the permanent blinds to often. 1- To save on the drama that I have heard comes with it 2- I pretty sure the birds will get use to getting shot at every time they get close to them.

I have been looking at fast grass, burlap and other materials to use to make a quick pop up blind or to just cover and break up my silhouette.

Alright I have a couple hoodies (not black!), light material jackets and some mid-heavy weight jackets. I do need to pick up a waterproof jacket though! I do have some trash bags in my blind bag already, but they where for trash not for decoying birds. However, if the birds wont pay me any attention I can promise you that I will think of this thread, grab my heafty bag and start waving away! The mojos are defiantly gonna be early teal season and for the 1st split until I notice that the birds aren't diggin them then they will be put away.

I CANT WAIT TO GET DOWN THERE AND SCOUT! I have done all the scouting I can for being 4300 miles away. My company XO is from the coast and he pointed me in the general direction of some areas to start looking. I have a large JET SLED that I can put the decoys in and pull it behind the yak, but that to will be trial and error.

Mini donuts and my thermos full of coffee  I like my snacks!

Thanks fellas for all the input, I am suffering from cabin fever BAD and I am trying to everything I can to pass time. 76 days until I am headed down.

Well, when ya get here smack em hard! Trash bags work wonders down here, divers do back flips over them. If you watch divers closely when they sit, they are always flaping those big bright wings around to dry them off and this is what the trash bag is imitating, it also just get ls their attention. Windy days i dont use calls, just my heafty

I plan on it! I seriously cant wait, I dont think I have ever been more excited about a season in my life! Do you ever use a call on the coast at all, besides whistles for pintails and such?

If you need help building a Ghillie blanket shoot me a message. I made mine for about 20-30 bucks out of camo burlap and manilla/hemp rope and it works pretty darn good from corn stubble to marsh grass and it is natural.

Sounds great!
It will probably be a little bit before I start on a project like that, due to the fact that a 2 week old little girl can take up a lot of time.

Stump when you get down here imma run you around in the jeep and the boat to show you some good spots and launch sites for your yak. There's also lot's of mangroves to just sit in so dont worry about the blind stuff.

Wings, never really weighed it wet but I couldnt imagine more than about 5# soaking wet... mine is 6x8 ft and weighs under a pound and a half... and rolls up about the size of a small bed roll. Why?

Just curious. I've heard of people using them to cover kayaks or layout boats then becomes a nightmare when they drag in the water or get wet.

I use a kayak to get to some of my spots. So far I have just stashed it and found concealment elsewhere. I carry a marsh seat with me and call it good. I have used my mid sized jet sled, it is possible but in the wind it can be a workout. I am really wanting to hunt the coast this coming season and this is probably what I will be doing.

The one i made is fairly small... I can imagine a large ghillie soaked or dragging in the water could suck.
