Nice fish stump & mojo. I need to get down there for the drum run one of these years. I'm still looking for some white bass. So far I have only found a few. The weather this year has got everything different.

First Guadalupe bass just before the cold came in(literally). Never fished bass much but it's kind of fun and there's no shortage of them around here. Anyway they will definitely work til Opelousas time. Hope everyone is still getting out to do something in the woods or on the water.

Other than a skunk down in Baffin, I haven't stopped hunting long enough to fish.

Guess its time I chime in, 2 trips since January and we held our own for the conditions and paddling 15mi a day in kayaks.

First Trip ~ Secret location~ Day 1

My 30" 9lb 4oz and my compadres 28" and change 8lb trout.

ImageImageImageImageImage
And the ones we didnt release... photos dont show the 30 and 31" reds CPR'ed

First Trip ~ Upper Laguna Madre ~ Day 2

I pulled my first kayak super slam in style with a 27 1/2" red, 19 3/4" flounder, a 7 trout to 21" the 21 was released, and a limit of black drum to 23". Meat haul stringer was 60 lb.

My buddy also picked up 6 solid trout and tons of dinks.

ImageImageImage
The results of our two day meat haul, yes this is 2 days of fish iced overnight and all cleaned at once thanks to the cold weather for any net wardens. All oversize were released to haunt the dreams of future anglers.

More to come from trip two.

Second Trip ~ Upper Laguna Madre ~ One day Spring break grind

Took my buddy out to a favorite spot where he could learn to paddle and fish, dang we were in for a treat capped off by fresh fish on an open fire on the chaotic beach during spring break.

We picked up a few keepers in the morning but things didnt kick off until I sent my buddy to check a little hole I knew of, it was a fish every cast from then on with schoolie dinks. My buddy was having a blast, about every 12th fish was a keeper and we kept those above 16". Then it got really rowdy. The trout feeding brought in the bulls and uglies. A kayaker nearby hooked into a 35lb black drum and was off on a sleigh ride for almost an hour. A while later I picked up a few slot drum to 22". Then out of nowhere my rookie kayaker buddy got slammed on his itty bitty 6' walmart bass rod with 125 yd of 15lb braid. I immediately knew what was up and told him to hang on and unclip his stake out, confused a bit he listened and was off like a shot. I could tell by the direction changes and spurt runs it was a solid bull red. After breaking my stake and chasing him down I was able to coach him for 20 to 30 minutes until we were able to wrangle his red into my net. Both tired and in need of a beer we retired to the launch with his personal best redfish all tagged up and ready to fillet at a solid 15 plus lbs and 36 3/4"

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Both stringers werent too shabby and got some funny looks from the power boat crowds. Regardless nothing makes me happier than taking someone new to the kayak fishing sport out for a good time. The fresh fillets cleaned in keg beer and scandalous scenery were a nice end to a good day. I learned that I am definitely getting too old for the spring break drama but I was way too tired to drive home.

Until the next trip,

Yall stay salty my friends!

Answer to your question Mike is rarely inshore, but once it warms up and the pelagics come back to play you can find them from the surf to the rigs. Plan on catching myself some smacks kings and lings outta the kayak very very soon.
