Alright, alright...it's a coot. But, not much else flying and my son's first chance at a bird. I hunted him really hard today. Cold, tromping through snow and swamp. Probably 3-4 miles. But, he kept right up and didn't complain. I worried that this was a tough way to get him into duck hunting; exhausting and not much other than a few mud hens. But on the drive home, as he was falling asleep, he said, "Dad, can we go hunting tomorrow?" Looks like I've got a hunting partner. Imagine what might happen once I get him a chance at REAL ducks???

Nothing wrong with a coot for practice. Keep the boy going and you'll have a hunting partner for life.

Hey, I whipped up a nice recipe for the coot. Tastes just like chicken...NOT. Kids loved it though.

this was for three birds; breasts, legs, thighs.

1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup minced garlic
Tblspoon sugar
enough milk to cover the meat in a bowl

Mix ingredients and pour over meat
Let sit covered overnight in the fridge

pat meat dry
dredge in flour
brown in hot skillet

cover the bottom of a baking dish with olive oil
take a half-cup of the liquid the birds have been chillin' in and add it to the baking dish
try to scoop up and add as much of the garlic as you can

lay the meat in the baking dish and sprinkle with sea salt, pepper, and paprika

Add a couple of dollops of sour cream
add some sliced sweet onion
chop upa cup of tomato and add it on top

cover with foil

bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes

try some mashed sweet potatoes, green beans, and cranberry relish along side.

Downright tasty!!!
