No Swan, but a great afternoon

Postby one8sevenn » Wed Nov 27, 2013 2:42 am

I set out to the BRBR to scout swans. I took my 4 month old GWP puppy, because I didn't figure on shooting anything. I walked the 1A dike and on the way out we jumped a ton of Goldeneyes and a few Scaup. I decided to sit down and make a little make shift blind, which my puppy saw as his jungle gym. We ate lunch and after a while I decided to give my puppy his first swim lesson. He picked it up like a champ, he was a little cold afterwards and I shared my coat. To dry further, I decided to go on a walk down the dike and I glassed a GWT about 75 yards away. We walked towards it and my dog jumped a RedHead and without thinking (because I assumed my dog was gun shy) I popped him. My dog made the retrieve after attempting to play keep away and being coaxed with kipper snacks, needless to say I was ecstatic. We sat the rest of the afternoon, watching flocks of Cans, Scaup, and Redheads buzz by. The swans didn't start flying until 10 till shooting time. I watched one lucky hunter bag one, but that was all. It was a really good, day and I think I found a new hunting companion.
