Where did they go?

Postby HotDog » Sun Nov 07, 2010 7:26 pm

There wasn't much flying on the lake this weekend. Is it me, or did anyone else have a couple of poor days?

Hammering puddlers or divers?. I've been chasing them for a couple of days in a row. And I just gave up on puddlers on that lake until those backwater start freezing. Anybody getting good bluebill hunt trough the Islands?..

Missisquoi had a ton of Mallards and Blacks up until about 10 days ago. There are hardly any up there now. There are in deed a lot of Bluebills around, but unfortunately you can only take 2. We had about 50 swimming in our decoys for about a half hour the other day after we had already shot our 2 bird limits. It was almost too much for the dog to take. Saw hundreds more in addition to those, but have seen very little as far as other species in the last week.

There seems to be more birds now than a week ago. Plenty of mallards and blacks, and the bluebills are here. It seems like only black ducks were decoying for me last weekend. Saw big flocks of mallards in the northern part of the lake, just decoy shy. Most people I talked to, limited on big ducks over the weekend, which seems to be the opposite of 2 weeks ago. Hopefully, it will get better as it has been a very slow year for me. I have not seen this many geese since my trip to Canada last year.

We shot 2 limits of mallards in a slough that borders some corn fields this morning. I would guess that we saw 300 mallards using the field closest to us. We decided to change tactics since the lake has not been producing mallards for us the way we would like.
What part of the lake were the folks that shot limits of big ducks hunting? I would guess that it probably was not Missisquoi, as there was almost no shooting up there over the weekend and people were leaving by 8:00 due to lack of activity. Very few mallards seen and the few that were there were extremely shy. I talked to a couple parties that had 1 or 2 mallards, but that was as good as it got in regards to big ducks. Good luck everybody.

suprised that storm didnt push anything down. all the mallards that ive saw are pretty much gone. i have been seeing alot of bluebills too and buffleheads. i think theres too much water and pressure on the lake. they can be anywere now untill it frezzes.

Around here we had enough cold temps that the little backwater puddles froze up pushing ducks to the larger open waters but with the tropical temps forecast now through early next week those will open back up.

Had a pretty good hunt this morning Wednesday the 10th. 2 hen mallards and way too may missed opportunities  . Saw lots of mallards but many drakes. Saw lots of birds landing hard in one area so I'm planning on going back in a day or two and setting up where all the birds want to be. Hopefully it will produce! I'll keep you guys posted.

There wasn't much shooting on the missisquoi refuge last weekend. There was some EARLY saturday morning and less than a dozen on sunday. I think the time change screwed some people up! Can't say I have heard of any real good puddle duck shoots in a while.. I am hoping for colder weather to come around thanksgiving!

Blaster: The bird on the right is a black, not a hen mallard. Be careful you are only allowed one of those.

That white wing bar on the black looks mallardish to me. Probably a hybrid.
What? There's open water? Its not cold enough.

You are probably right with it being a hybrid, that being said. My first look at the ducks and I noticed right off that the one on the right had the olive colored bill and was noticeably darker (hen black). The wardens will call it a black for sure.

Just be careful in future hunts. Good luck!

I think your right. I should have looked for the second wing bar on the black but because one of them was so distinct I thought it was a mallard. I had a friend with me so we could have got one more black but I need to be more careful examining my birds next time! Don't want to take over bag limit! Thanks guys.

With a hybrid, I think you can call it what you want toward your limit. I'm not a game warden, but how could they argue with you if you call that bird a black or a mallard, its both.

According to the "National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America": Black Ducks have a violet speculum which is bordered in black and may show a thin white trailing edge. As far as calling a hybrid what you want towards your limit is correct, but in this case you you can only call this bird a Black duck.
