Mallard Nest Structure

Postby pec » Wed Jan 18, 2006 12:53 pm

Have any of you tried using Mallard nest structures in VA? I currently have wood duck houses, and am interested in trying some Mallard nest structures. The big problem could be the lack of mallards nesting in my area. You think the "If you build it, they will come" will work for mallards.

Do you have a link or diagram of a mallard box? I though they nested along the waters edge in grass and such?

Here's a link. They aren't necessarily "boxes." Studies have shown that mallards will use them with great success.

wow looks interesting.

I woudl probably try to do liek woody boxes, dont put out too many or they will dump nest and not hatch.

mallards may act different, but it would be a good precaution.

pec-

VDGIF has a ton of data on the "tubes" for mallards. Contact the Williamsburg office, and ask for David Norris (biologist).

Good luck, and make sure you use predator gaurds.
