1 st DHC Quail/Pheasant Hunt...

Postby cut_un » Wed Feb 08, 2006 3:32 pm

In the planning stages of getting a group of DHC folks together for a "bird hunt followed by dinner( maybe Hooters????) event.
Do not know if anyone has used the Orapax Plantation but I've been on a few Quail/ Pheasant hunts. It's a "pay to play' hunt but it will be a chance to "get together" shoot a few birds and see some fine dog work. Hope to get a group together for a evening of fun and maybe dinner afterwards.I'm hoping to lock in a Sat.evening but it may have to be a Sunday evening if nothing is available. All is open at this point depending of "the takers"
Anyone interested please pm me so we can make plans...to have some fun Cut

I have to ask , is it a hunt or a shoot , if it is a hunt I want in but if it is a shoot I would just as soon go to old forge and shoot clay ? I too would like to know the cost ?

This is the scoop as I know it....
The location is Orapax Plantation ( Goochland County) Rt 6.. on the river
Quaility hunts for Quail and /or Pheasant

10 quail per man... 4 pheasant per hunter

1 hunter...$110.00.... 1 hunter....$125.00
2 " ".....$200.00....... 2 " ".....$226.00
3 " ".....$270.00........ 3" ".....$300.00
4 " ".....$340.00........ 4 " ".....$392.00

It is an quality hunt over dogs and much like the hunts "we " went on as a boy" I "as a rule get the ten quail and throw in a extra pheasant or two..cause they taste soooo good and are fun to see flush!
Oh, extra quail are $7.00 each and the pheasant are $21.00 each
As I said, it's pay to play and the playing is called a half day hunt Weekend half days only, can be morning followed by lunch or evening follow by Hoo&^% er diner

I like what I am reading but now we have a problem I think , 1 to 4 hunters and we are up to 6 . I did a search using Orapax Plantation and saw that they shoot clay there too , I wonder if they can do a hunt and a clay shoot at the same time ? We could find two more hunters and do a morning hunt and a afternoon hunt . Then the morning hunters could shoot clays waiting for the other hunt to end so we all could do the hoot meal .
Or better yet I and one other could go on to Hoot and shoot the breeze while looking around :salude: .

I like your last idea... go to the hoot and shoot 'de breeze" as long as I get to be the 'one other"
Ld, I figured it to be more than a foursome , we can split up and go in several groups ..or do the clay thing as you suggest  I'm up for and need a little "extra practice"

hey guys i hate to run with y'all ideas but the place i us to guide at has the best quail in the world. 2 hunters 30 quail 225 and 3 hunters i think its like 250. Pheasants the same price but its for ten. I can call and get the correct total on pheasants. they can handle up to 9 people hunting. And they have a clays range too. Let me know if any of you guys are interested in looking into that.

Down there is Murfreesboro NC. Its one 1.4 hours from dances sporting goods. When i was there we had a old dog that would point with a bird in his mouth at least once a hunt. Ranger is an awesome dog. Before i left we breed him and i was helping start his son on birds. I cant wait to get there on the 17 to see how he is doing.

Those birds were flying hard. I killed my fair share and missed a few easy ones too. I had one that thought it was a goose and looked like it decoyed to me. Needlees to say that ended in a huge puff of feathers. I had one flying at me sooo hard that i almost fell over. I was facing forward and bent all the way back shooting behind me. Still got the bird. Over all it was a great time, and i got to see all my NC buddies again. Not to mention i got some of that awesome NC cooking. Boy do i miss that. Those guys fed us well
