I read a piece in the paper the other day that was talking about "raising ducks" in the central area of Virginia on a yearly basis. It did talk about the pros and cons of the idea but the general idea was that it will help waterfolwing in our area. Sounds like a good idea to me! IS/ Are the Vawfa involved with that project. How do you guys feel about it? Is it good or bad?

No we arent involved in teh raising ducks. That is a private venue, mostly preserves. I am not too keen on the idea. It is a bandaid on teh problem with our area.

The reason bird #s are low is not b/c they arent being raised here it is b/c they dont have as much natural food and habitat. If we actually started caring aobut waht we are doing to our area (i.e., streams, wetlands, riparian areas) we would see an improvement.

This is WAY too big of a problem for VAWFA, sorry. Even DU woudl ahve a hard time fixing it b/c it goes to so many political pockets it is not even funny...every level of politician has say in it and their constituency has a say...actually whoever has the most $$$ has the say.

So in short, I am not for pen raised birds (ducks that is), I have no problem raising some pheasant or chukar (they are not native and were not historically here and now gone b/c loss of habitat).

stepping down from soap box.

I read that piece too Bone, I don't think the DGIF was too keen on the idea either. They were going to do a study on the whole concept. Only one spot here on the main land and I think their is 3 on the eastern shore.
But bottom line is "we all" need to do something !

There are close to 70 million ducks that migrate from north to south each year. The last thing we need to do is introduce problems from a few pen raised birds into the migratory birds. I am totally against it.
