So the list on page one is the order in which we hunt with it and now long will it get to hunt with each hunter ? Sorry to have to ask but I didn't read the traveling decoy threads last year . I have a lot of black duck holes to pitch one of them into :hammer: .

The way it normally works is that once the season dates come out, the person running the scheduling will put up a list for each weekend during the season. If you want to maximize time over the decoy, you start it during the September teal season. So if you go by last years seasons, you would have 14 weekends to hunt over the decoy, which would mean 14 hunters could sign up. If you want more than that to hunt over the decoy, you try to get the guys close to each other to pair up for a hunt, which i did with callncut 2 seasons ago with the Atlantic Rambler.

Now, as far as who gets what weekend, the scheduler should post up each weekend date and allow those that signed up to pick the best weekend. You might have to do some shuffling around and compromising as well. It can be a pain...trust me...if you don't get a headache at least one time during the scheduling then something is not right. :lol3: The biggest thing as well is to make sure you guys set a day during the week that the decoy must be shipped off by and stick with it. Nothing worse than being scheduled to hunt over a Traveler, and it doesn't show up in time for your hunt on Friday or Saturday, had that happen to me before too. Since it is staying within the state, i would say ship it off each Tuesday, and expect to hunt over it by Thursday.

Overall, it is not that difficult. Once the list of dates go up, pick your day. If something comes up, see if you can switch with someone else. It can go smooth and be a lot of fun.

Looking at the poll the black duck is going to win and their season is out until the Nov. split  . I know one can shoot over any kind of coy but there would be something missing when one couldn't take the bird over it . Guess it could be a catch and release hunt and put the kill shot picture in the book .

Lew we may have 2 floating around the state, just depends. The other will not be a black duck. Have Gun is donating a black duck to the cause as long as he receives the coy back afterward. I am possibly going to get ahold of a cork or wood mallard/rigneck to throw in the pot as well. :grooving:

Count me in.gw or a blue Bill.I got some ceder boards that I pulled out of the bottom of a boat that I could laminate together with fiberglass resin to make one.wouldn't mind doing it as long as I get it back at the end. Of the season . It wouldn't be a showpiece but you don't need a showpiece to kill birds.but I would like to take part in hunting over the decoy

Sounds good BIB, added you to the list. Looks like for the 1st decoy it is going to be a black by Have Gun. 2nd coy is undetermined (if we have one). That would be cool if you made a decoy maybe for a future traveler, I am looking into carving myself.

I will have a redhead, scaup, wood duck or teal to toss in for the traveler. I carve a jersey working decoy just as my entire family has done for four generations.

Sounds good gooose! Let me know what you got when they are complete. We are in the works for a 2nd bird now with 18 signups.

I think it would be a good idea for a diver to be the second coy. Because some people might not have a place to hunt a black duck. Just my two cents

You can kill a black duck in a large variety of places, swamps, rivers, creeks, salt marshes, open water marshes, etc.. But I feel you BIB I would like to see a diver in the pot as well. How does one feel about a ringneck?

A black duck shouldnt be the only duck a black duck decoy will attract?

All puddle ducks will land with black duck decoys. Blacks tend to land with their own kind typically.

I've had 5 blacks land right outside my bluebills and cans.

Yeah I was just pointing out that they decoyed to divers. Not that they only like to land with their own kind.

all good points. was just thinking it would probably be easier to kill a bluebill than a black which would lead to more gunning action and stories

Is it too late to get in on this? I know its not September yet but the way everyone is talking this up you'd think it was next week. I just got back from a couple-week business trip and finally had a chance to read the DHC boards. If its not too late I'd like to get on the list for next season.

p.s. - we had a black duck drop into our little knot of bufflehead decoys last year.....poor guy must have been confused
