Been seeing a few teal and gadwall in my pond occassionally all year long. I think a handful stay around these parts now...kinda like resident geese. Hey, there a thought...resident duck season!

Took this pic last Wednesday night. Been seeing a large group of ducks hanging out in a small pond.

Could very well be injured birds. Obviously not hurt to fatality, but enough that they know a trip to Saskatchewan and back ain't happening. #5 steel rips a breast muscle, duck flies off a few miles and "goes resident" in its natural wintering grounds.

resident woodies and mallards are normal, not resident pintails. Injured birds make sense. Or birds that had so much food they didnt need to leave. buddy said the pond was surrounded by grain fields........

IG I find that interesting, I wonder up and down the coast how many stay put in one spot and dont make it back north???

I have personally seen a brood of Gadwall down home here in the salt marsh a couple years ago. I have also heard of bluewing teal broods also in the marsh. By August, many migrators will be well on their way South, Pintails, teal, shovelers migrate earliest follow by Baldcrown and a few Gadwall. We have had redheads and bluebills sitting in the decoys in Sept. teal season.
