Postby Trv » Mon Jul 29, 2013 7:42 am

Just saw it on the dgif site
Really cool that we have a 6 bird teal limit with 18 in poss.
Md will probably copy va and do it too, if not this season def next season

Remember long lead and a quick prayer when dealing with teal.

The season needs to be moved well forward, blues are gone from the hills long before the end of September.

Greens don't even register into my thinking for the early season since they're around throughout most of the year.

Agree with TIS...most blues are long gone by the Sept. season, and the greenies seem to stay most of the regular season.

I would want more days to hunt them over more birds per day but you goose hunters must have that dang 30 after sunset . I never see loners of teal most times a half dozen to a flock or more so I guess it's all good .
Funny how teal and pintails fly through well before any season and everything else hangs up north until they can't take the cold anymore to come down here around the middle of February .

We start seeing bluewings in mid August on the coastal salt marsh, along with Pintails, Shovelers and a few Baldcrown. These early migrants do not stay long in the marsh and basically we are pass shooting the teal as they wing their way down the coast. The teal are very trusting at this stage of their migration, sometimes we can call back the same flock for a second volley.

The movement of teal depends alot on the weather. Any north wind can push them out overnight, or alternately, push them in. If they have a good foood source and a reason to stay, and the weather stays mild with no fronts, they will stay for atleast some time in a given area. Gw teal can come in in september and stay till february. I have seen bw teal into november, but most are usually gone by October.

A guy in our group shot 2 BW teal in Decemeber at our hole last year, but besides that it was all GWs....they did hang around until late December though when we started to finally get some ice in the swamp.

In 2001 I shot bluewing teal in the intercoastal over ice in late December. It was strange. Over the past 34 years of hunting, I have taken a few during the late winter months. I guess they find a spot that is safe, warm(ish) and has a good food source so they stay put. They sure are pretty when you take them late in the season too.
Cheers

We feed after the season and we have gw teal in there till mid march. Those buggers will hang for most of the season here. BWs do get shot late into the year but its rare and they tend to be mixed in with gws. I really want a mature bw teal drake but havent shot one after november.
