Mature black duck. These things have been tormenting me recently. Sneaking up behind me in the marsh, arriving in the decoys before shooting time, landing just out of range. I'm carving up a spread of cork black ducks and mallards to get some good juju out in the spread. Hopefully they won't sneer at the spread anymore now that it's not "plastic."
I've shot a drake pintail, but I was hunting at a private club where dues cost more than I'd care to know (i'm not a member). I'd love to get another one on public water, where money is less a part of the equation than effort.
I've been a part of killing several drake cans, but they've all be scenarios where multiple hunters shot at once, and I don't have one to specifically call my own. I doubled up on two hens a few years ago when the limit was two, and it killed me to go pick them up and not see that beautiful red head. Maybe if the staff recommendations pass and they give us another 2 can limit, we can show some restraint in the blind and let me pick and choose my trophy drake.
My brother would love to go to the Bering Sea in Alaska and shoot eiders, or go shoot exotic mammals in Africa, but I would get no satisfaction for an animal that I merely paid a guide to take me to. I want to be as involved as possible in the process that leads up to my trophy birds. My own boat, blind, decoys, calling, etc. Maybe I'm being too picky and I should enjoy a rare treat
