Todays Central VA Goose Hunt

Postby ifitflysitdies » Thu Jan 22, 2004 8:59 pm

This morning we hit a farm with a large pond in hopes of pullin a decent flock of birds off a nearby lake. The whole flock pitchd into the decoys at about 9 and it must have been about 150 birds al at once BAM! We cut two birds that were banded and 6 tha were not. Not bad for 3 people! This evening i hit one of my favorite farms with beans, corn, and hay fields. I thought the birds had pretty much picked the corn over in early season when w were knocking out 15-20 ech morning, but of course we set up in he hay fields and no less than 1500 birds prtched on the same knoll w hunt in the corn. It wa a crazy afternoon. No birds came home this eving with us...save um for te weekend!

I'm not familiar with the daily limits in VA - what is it these days? I used to hunt DELMARVA and don't recall liberal limits - in fact, isn't MD only one? Just curious. It may be worth a trip south. I haven't done that trip in 15 years.

The limit in VA ranges from 1 to 5 birds per hunter depending on where you are in the state. Right now where im hunting the late seaon limit is 5 per hunter. We just went out saturday afternoon an slammed some birds. Ive never had ducks land in goose decoys before around here but we lit some greenheads up along with 15 geese. We had several flocks pushing well over 300 birds each along with man grops of 20-30 comming in. The geese are really here right now and Lighting the decoy slam up. We checked the field that we are going to hunt tomorrow and there wa no less than 2000 birds feeding right next to it. Things should trn out well tomorrow hopfully!

outstanding! good luck - I am really cranky right now - I need some action - will probably head out on Sat morning for a snowshoe hare or maybe get lucky with a cottontail - I had turkeys in the yard yesterday - actually considered pulling out the pellet gun

Where in Central VA are you hunting? I have a very small farm (7.5 acres), and have greenheads (and of course the obligatory Canada geese) occasionally lighting on my property. I am just outside of Richmond.
