Hogg Island Quota Hunt

Postby G3duck » Mon Oct 07, 2013 6:44 am

Well, after a gazillion applications I finally got a draw for Hogg Island 12/28.
Never been there (never been drawn), so any advice or info would be appreciated.
Seems the DGIF website is down so I can't get anything off the tube.

Going to be nice to get out of the local swamps.

I'd take a few decoys with ya! Not many 1/2 doz ducks or so,Maybe a goose butt or two! just saying.... towards the seasons end... those supplied can be muddy, broken/tangled lines. Def. does not hurt your chances to have some deks looking ,clean & pretty! Good Luck!

These blinds are good depending on the wind direction: 4, 5, 6 and 10.

Are the blinds in open water, marsh ??????
No problem bringing in decoys but what? Geese? Divers? Puddle Ducks?

I'd like to get there and NOT wish I'd brought "whatever".

Thanks for the help guys!

i like 7 and 9 too. not too many bad spots when the birds are there. if you have a full group with you of workhorse type, take a dozen geese and 18 ducks mine being a teal, wigeon mallard mix and a two pairs of pins... better?

and if you have a swan tag take it too....

We carried all our gear on a decoy sled, made it easy when you had a long "haul" to the blind. You'll have fun there, heres a tip; Take the birds on the first pass if they are in range, we have lost lots of shots on birds working the spread to other blinds shooting and scarring the ducks. Remember, some folks don't hunt alot, can't tell the difference between a mallard and a sap sucker and can not estimate yardage looking down a gun barrel. Good Luck!

be very mindful of your wind direction for that day...... They/John will let you know how productive each blind has been during the season, before you make your choice.! But...every day is/will be different!!!

The geese decoys they have are passable. I might bring a few high visability duck decoys but remember you are going to hump all that stuff in. A jerk string would be the best thing to bring.

Haul you in a dozen DSD geese and some Full Curl mallards for the pond, and you're set to dominate the DD playground! P.S. - Tell Dominion my electric bill is too high at Checkpoint Charlie.
