What is a good decoy for the money ?

Postby bass_hunter » Wed Oct 23, 2013 9:27 am

I was wondering , does anyone have a brand that you recommend that the paint stays on ? I'm want to add a few new blacks and mallards. Looks like i pick the wrong one every time and the paint starts coming off the first year.

i really like the pro grade Greenhead gears. Kind of along Cuts line, i dig how they all have a different pose to them instead of the marching band look. Paint has done well so far, I would highly recommend slotted bags and the paint will last on almost any other them.

GHG, G&H and Dakota are the best coys on the market.

Plasti-duck decoys are Indestructible. Expensive, but worth it in the long run.

For geese, bigfoot or G&H. For ducks, G&H or plasti-duck. Herters are great too, if you can still find them. Any of those brands can last decades if looked after.

If you only hunt a few times a year GHG are ok :fingerpt: . If you go every day G&H ,the paint last 100x better.I bought 4 dz. GHG didn't last one season before they looked like junk and yes I use a slotted bag. :welcome:

I have ghg and dakota. The Dakotas are nice but realistically, the bang for the buck is in the ghg pro grades. I have slotted bags as well and will say they help. However, if you are slamming them on the bottom of the boat while picking them off the water, they are gonna get beat up.

realistically the dakotas are only $20 more. And I believe way more durable.

Dakota- 140 a doz
Pro Grade- 120ish a doz

Honestly sometimes the flocked heads annoy me because they get dirt/mud on them and it simply will not come off. Keep this in mind if you are looking at buying dakotas. They do however come with 2 sets of heads though. The other set is painted not flocked.

Slotted bags. Once they're too beat up, paint as a blue bill.

i bought a couple cans of matte finish clear coat and sprayed mine down when they were brand new and they still look like new. Hunted over them probably 100 times in the last 2 years

For geese, I really like my higdon floaters.

Those sweet flocked heads get a nice frosted look when the morning dew freezes on it. I also like the line pincher on the ghg versus the hook on the keels. I hunt with both each has pros and cons.

Go with the Green Head Gear. They have the highest quality for the money. People who claim the paint comes off don't take adequate care of their decoys because it simply isn't true.

:fingerpt: GHG = 1 season . G&H have some ten years old that could pass for new. I hunt just about everyday for the past 30 years and G&H is the way to go . :welcome:

THIS^^^

Ive had mine for 4 seasons now. Very very minimal paint wear and I do not use slotted bags.
