James River Hunting

Postby Redskins93 » Mon Dec 16, 2013 1:22 am

Hey All -
Question. I hunt on the potomac but I spend a lot of time in Richmond so Im curious about the waterfowl opportunities on the James. I have a duck boat with a floating blind license and everything. My question is- Is it hard to find decent spots to hunt on the James from a floating blind? Where would you recommend starting out/ scouting?

Lots of tagged blinds, good spots are hard to come by.

There's this big nuclear reactor on the south side of the river. I think you have to have a permit to hunt there, but don't bother with that. Because of the radiation given offf by the reactor, the ducks there actually glow in the dark, making it very easy to hunt at night. The security staff is all asleep, so it works out perfectly. Mallards give off a fluorescent green, while pintails are more of a soft orange glow. Don't shoot the mergansers, they have an intense blue glow, as the radiation from the reactor combines with all the kepone that bioaccumulates in the frogs and minnows they eat. Good luck!

Shoot me a PM. We can trade some spots. I'll give you dirt on Richmond and you can let me hunt your Potomac spots when you aren't there.
