Worse season in years

Postby Islander Gunner » Fri Dec 20, 2013 10:59 am

This has got to be the worse season yet for our bunch. You got to any blind and you don't see "A duck" of any sorts. Its like hunting in a barren marshy wasteland void of all living creatures. It sucks right now! I'm thinking about changing the name of our hunt club to "Hemroid Hunt Club, Where EVERY hunt is a pain in the *ss!" :violin:

Thanksgiving week, there were some birds around. Not much now. I've been chasing black ducks recently, so if you get one, your day is done! I guess its sad that I have to lower expectations to justify "success." This weather now doesn't help. I'm going out to brush the big diver blind tomorrow in hopes that we get some cold weather in January. Good luck everyone :hammer:

I'm kind of surprised to hear this from so many. It certainly hasn't been a perfect season but I couldn't believe how good it was up until about a week ago. Big ducks nearly every time. Even if it was one, they kept showing up. I thought December last year was a wasted month, and the last ten days or so have been that way but I'm optimistic based on the early season turnout.

Last year this time I hadn seen but a handful of the mallards and blacks. Small Divers, Greys and baldpates were pretty common. It's been backwards so far. Either way, praying for colder weather.

Getting plenty of ducks and geese where I hunt. Mallards, blacks, woodrows, and some gadwall. Good size bunches of ducks. Don't know why the migration is screwed up this year. Last year very few ducks. This year plenty. Must be an east west thing. :welcome:

Maybe I'm wrong but I notice, In years with lots of rain like this year the birds are west. In dryer years they tend to be more on the coast. What do you guys see?

More water we have the more birds we hold. Mainly on the backwater of the rivers.

Fair number of geese around.

Places that have ducks seem to have a good amount. Everywhere else has little/nothing.

Swamps have been pretty empty. We have killed a few wood ducks. Nothing else.

In my area the geese numbers are building. Hopefully after this warm spell the divers will make a showing then I can determine the season

We have had these "%$^%%*&%*^" seasons in the past and the only thing you can do is grin & bear it and keep going as much as you can stand it. Every blind we have is crummy right now, so I just go to an easy spot (tide & wind) and sit, wait and hope something will fly by. Pretty soon the season will be over, then the really COLD weather will hit and there will be ducks every where, ganging up in rafts to tear the cedars off the blinds!

Worst Nov/Dec ever for myself and every other valley hunter I know. Frozen ponds and flooded creeks and rivers means no birds, especially geese.

Just like last year, with a slow nov/dec and a somewhat above-average January, I think we are about to turn the corner here folks. With 25 degrees and snow on the forecast for this coming weekend, plus 2 days off this week, I am being slightly optimistic about the final stretch. Good luck!

Posted in another thread that this has been a hit or miss season so far. We have killed 5-10 birds (mallards and geese) on some outings, and not shot on others. Usually see good number of birds most hunts, but sometimes not in range. Have yet to hunt in Maryland yet this year, but our pit blind lease has limited out on geese every hunt so far and even killed some snow geese. Maybe the birds are just hung up just north of us. My other theory is I keep hearing more and more about private owners building impoundments strictly for duck hunting...any chance these "new" areas are changing the birds' wintering habits? Hard to prove though. Don't give up....things can change in a day.
Get 'em close.
