My bad , I should have left out the 10 ga. stuff the question didn't ask about them .
a gun pattern is going to remain the same and the bigger shell is only going to put more shot in the pattern , which will only tear up a dead bird
Sure if all of your shots are 40 to 50 yards you won't tear up the birds but take a shot at a 20 to 30 yard bird and try to eat it .
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to pass on a 40 to 60 yard shot but more times then not the bird will come back closer . Give me a 3" # 4 hevi-shot and I will be just fine at 0 to 60 yards , I may have to use the edge of my pattern for those first 20 yards .
