Foamer Spread Update

Postby ScaupHunter » Fri Nov 22, 2013 1:02 pm

As you all know I have been keeping busy working on a large foamer spread. I have enough completed to hunt local birds and have been working steadily for a few hunts I have planned east of the mountains and up north on the salt. Here are some update pictures. Most of the decoys need a few finishing touches and many will be having the eyes mounted over the weekend between hunts.

This is just a small smattering of the spread that is either completed or very close to completed. I am working through the fine feathering detail on 3 dozen puddler hens and hope to have that and the head ticking done by the end of next week. Then it is on to casting scoters, and finishing up the painting on the Harlequin hens, Redhead hens, and Old Squaw hens which are all base painted right now. Fortunately Scoters are easy to paint so the next 50 deeks will move from casting to finished decoy quickly.

Finally getting a few ducks in the area. It is time to see if I can shoot a drake off one of the hens while it is trying to breed the decoy.

I don't think you would like the prices. They are very time intensive and the materials aren't exactly cheap. On the upside of things I won't ever buy another decoy. I also won't be needing to make more in my lifetime once I get the initial spread made. The only way I will need more is if I decide to expand the spread some here and there. If I decide to change the paint schemes I just brush on the base colors I want and do a repaint. They can't be sunk, Patching holes is as easy as a hot glue gun or silicone tube and some paint touch up.

I'm sure I couldn't afford them, but they sure are good looking! Sounds like you're set for life.

Done right you can make your own for around $8 to $10 a decoy if you are only making small batches. If you make bigger runs of deeks you can drop that down to $5 a decoy in materials. That of course is assuming you call the head and body mold paid off after the first couple of dozen decoys. The real cost in the decoys is in time and effort.

I would highly reccomend that anyone who wants to try it pm me with questions. I am happy to help folks out. If your serious about moving foward I have been known to send a body and head casting, along with a keel piece for folks to give it a run. That doesn't mean every guy on here hops on and says me, me, me! :lol3: I am going to be casting heads this next week. My new order of EPS for body molding should be in so I can start casting scoter bodies the following week. I could cast a few teal or small puddler bodies in that process. I have a few extra heads for those bodies left over from my last run of casting. That would give a couple of guys that are interested in pursuing the hobby a trial run.

With decoys that nice and with much work in them, I think it would be justified to deal a blow to the junk of the fist guy that water swats a bird in the deeks.

Just sayin'. :lol3:
