Get a book on basic obedience and see how it does. If the dog takes right to the training then send it off to be trained. Lots of mutts have made excellent bird dogs. It is more about training and working with the dog than it is about the breed. Having a well bred dog makes them easier to train in many cases. That doesn't mean the mutt won't be a good bird dog.

Toss in that any dog fights that come up should go your dogs way as well and you may just have a winner.

WHY SEND A DOG OFF. It is easy to train a dog. It is hard to train the block head owner. Self trained will wipe butt on any outside training. IF you know how. Easy to keep your money.
