Public comment sought on
state game management plan

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is conducting a public opinion survey to help identify key wildlife issues to be addressed in the department’s 2015-2021 Game Management Plan.

The information gathered from the survey will help WDFW update its current plan, originally developed in 2003 and updated in 2009. The plan guides the long-term management of game species, and is used to develop three-year hunting packages that set annual regulations for hunting seasons.

The survey is available on WDFW’s website through Jan. 3 at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/game/2015/ . Paper copies of the survey also are available by contacting the Wildlife Program at (360) 902-2515.

"The public’s involvement is essential in creating a comprehensive and effective game management plan," said Dave Ware, WDFW game division manager. "We look forward to hearing from people as we go about updating this plan that will guide game management priorities."

The opinion survey addresses a number of game management issues, including:
•Hunter recruitment and retention
•Hunting regulations
•Land access for hunting
•Wildlife conflict
•Habitat enhancement
•Questions directed at specific species

Once the survey results are analyzed, WDFW will incorporate them into a draft plan, which will go out for public comment next spring. The plan will be considered for final approval by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission next summer.

I have just taken this survey also.

Having worked with the commission and the Dept on numerous occasions I can say that even a modest interest and response from the public can bring results. If 10 percent of duck hunters responded to say ( the lack of crops planted to attract and retain waterfowl) it would get their attention, if we could get 20 or 30 percent we could sway just about any advances that we wanted.

I sure hope others take an interest here and urge others to do the same thing.

I have lost a lot of faith in WDFW in the last few years.

I was very heavily involved with the sport fishing, commission and the WDFW and several organizations in the north end and they have grown in prominence as of late and made great strides.
Unfortunately politics are involved and sometimes take precedence and if you can get motivated and gather people together you can get things done, if not you will get what they give you!

I once heard it discribed as "Herding cats" when it came to getting fisherman involved in politics, I can only imagine what it would take to get a bunch of duck hunters involved!

Does it matter if we get involved? I have seen them go against science and hunter opinion to set feel good policy. Why bother?

Thanks for the heads up. I took the survey and would not have known about it if not for this post.

That is what our opposition depends on,(Anti's, other resource users and career WDFW personel that polish their chairs waiting for their state pensions to kick in) apathy.

I have stood at boat lauches and listened to guys whine and complain for hours, but ask them to get involved and they neither have the time nor inclination. People will buy the newest fangled gear but try and get them to spend a dollar to advocate for their sport and watch the whining begin.

If I sound cynical, it's because I have fought this same program for years in our fisheries.

I just completed the survey. Seems like too little attention to the Mt Goat decline but glad to see it's at least on their radar.
