I drove up the POR last weekend and the river was froze at the cusic, usk, and davis launches has anyone been up that way this week? I'm wondering some of the ice melted off? Otherwise i'm thinking about heading to the Columbia but have never hunted it and just fished.
thanks,
Dan

I have been in that area and the river is open there is still some ice along the shore in places. more ice to the north than south and there is ice floating out there so be careful. The launch by the usk bridge is open I did not look at the Cusick launch but it should be ice free too, might be tough getting out of that launch though without sand or chains.
Be safe out there..

Thanks for the tips. I rolled the dice and made the drive this morning. I was able to launch the boat ice about 30 yards out from shore in most parts. Hardly any ducks around including divers. Looks like tomorrow i will have to cover some ground and do some scouting as my brother and father are flying in from Wisconsin to duck hunt over the holidays. That cold snap two weeks ago really kid my plans. Any advice?
thanks,
Dan

well today i scouted the columbia and drove from Marcus all the way to seven bays and i bet i didnt see a 200 birds in the 300 miles i put on......looks like i may have to try the tricities or potholes area. Anyone have any advice on the potholes area? Should i put the blind back on my boat or can you hunt from shore out of layout blinds?

What kind of birds were you seein?
On the columbia i saw mostly golden eyes with a few buffleheads and mallards- i covered a lot of ground.... I was in the car for 7 hours driving and hiking around yesterday so the number of birds was pretty sad........

brokerbyduck,
Its hard to beat those layout blinds they sure do keep a guy warm. I've never been to the potholes area so i was wondering if it was huntable out of a layout blind or not. Looks like i'm going to be spending some time on google earth tonight and ill keep my fingers crossed i can put my old man on the birds...

Give the Mesebergs at Mar Don resort a call, but i suspect the potholes are pretty frosty these days.
Perhaps taking a small boat into Frenchman or Winchester wasteways would be good, at least water should be moving.
More certain is the Tri Cities area, try talking to Paul Sullivan at Burbank guide service. They cost money but I've shot geese with both, and think they'd at least tell you if the public areas are huntable or not.

I hunted the POR last weekend- most of the ice is gone just a little on the shore now. For this time of year we didnt see a lot of birds pretty much all golden eyes and of course a bunch of geese but i've found that they are pretty hard to kill up that way over water. Has anyone tried the tricities? I'm looking for a place to go in two weekends i've got two good buddies that fly out every year for a late season duck hunt.......
