So what do you make of this?

Postby brokerbyduck » Fri Feb 07, 2014 8:49 pm

I shot a barrows this year towards the end of the season. As you can tell from the terrible pics I took of him, he's a bit green for a barrows. Do I have a hybrid on my hands or just a green variant?

: Well that's interesting ... Have a Common on my wall, ... and a Barrows.

Will say that without it in my hand, can't help ya out ... BUT your partner in crime / Litter mate might be able to shed light on it.

Both common and barrows show variation in color I think. I shoot a common that was bluish on Willapa this year.

My barrows that I shot this year was most definitely blue. However, the internet yields some really good pictures. Barrow's vary in color slightly, but the white patch is a dead give away.

Different angles of natural light can show a bluish or green looking head from my experience. The ones I shot off of Whidbey looked very dark green in the right light.

Yours just appears to be a mature one. Not a hybrid.

I'd mount it! What awesome bird!

I wish I knew half as much, and shot half as many birds as the guys on DHC claim they do...

Thanks for sharing your experience guys. I can't say I was disappointed to see he was green and not blue/purple when the dog brought him back, but I did have to Google a bunch of barrows pics to see that some are green. That got me to thinking whether the green might be a result of cross breeding with a common or just natural variations from bird to bird. This is my first barrows and before the Google search, I had only seen more blue examples on the wall.

This bird is going to the taxidermist, I'm gonna have him mounted next to a common and leave an open spot for a blue/purple I hope to take in the future.
