Duck with Transmitter

Postby duckeer » Sat Jan 26, 2013 6:45 pm

Hey Guys,
I just finished todays hunt with awesome results. Went duck hunting with my brother for his birthday and between the two of us here are the results: 2 Black duck hens, 2 mallard hens, 1 mallard drake, 2 redhead hens, 1 pintail and a merganser. We must have saw 60 ducks today. More ducks than our ability to shoot, haha. Thats why we had eight instead of our limit. The coolest thing of the hunt is that i killed my first banded duck. It was a black duck hen. Not only was she banded, but she was wearing a transmitter! Have any of you guys seen this before? I will post pics if anybody is interested.

What is the best way to upload the picture? I tried to upload as an attachment but it says the file is too large.

That is awesome. There was a huge study a few years ago on black ducks and their migration to the Chesapeake Bay. If you google it you will be able to find it and they used these GPS transmitters. I wonder if it could have been from that study. Nice job and that is one of a lifetime there. Congrats

It was attached sort of like a backpack. There was a wire that slipped over her head, and then another wire that wrapped around her body under the wings. It was very cool.

Hey Chad, I did turn in the band and below is the info i got:

INFORMATION FROM OUR FILES:
Species: AMERICAN BLACK DUCK
Date banded: 12/21/2011
Banding Location: 4.75 MI S OF NEW JOHNSONVILLE, HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TENNESSEE, USA
Age: HATCHED IN 2011
Sex: FEMALE

I did a little research and the distance between New Johnsonville TN where she was banded, and Petersburg, WV where she was killed is approx. 670 miles!

Very cool. I'm not sure but I have heard they who ever put the transmitter on will pay good money to get it back.

By the way, all of those ducks were called in using a new Duck Commander Triple Threat. Absolutely awesome call.
