Pond weed ID?

Postby Easttx » Sun Jul 01, 2012 9:05 pm

I have access to a new lake this coming duck season and decided to check it out today. The place went completely dry last year and now is infested with a submerged weed that is almost like a blanket under the surface. Can someone tell me what it is?

Here is a shot of it looking down in the water.

Right off the top of my head, my first take is that it looks like common Coontail (decaying not living). Probably the results of the drying up of the pond and refilling over the dead plants. The live plants will be back soon as the seed will now germinate with the new water.
I'll give you a website that may assist you to id aquatic plants. I have to deal with these invasive buggars all the time and many are a pain in the arse. Some are more common than others in different parts of the country. Down in my section, Duckweed has taken over our freshwater ponds.

Looks a lot like this. There's a pond I fish that's so full of the stuff that all I can do is get in there in March, April, and May before the weeds get too thick. Lots of nice small mouth bass but after the weeds start growing...every cast is miserable and I get sick of cleaning it off my lure. Then I switch to plastic worms.

Not 100 % sure but that looks like some stuff we got growin in one of our soil conservation lakes we hunt if it is the gadwalls and wigeons love it.... The stuff that's in ours is just under the surface and really thick... The birds were hammering it last year... But it could of been because of the drought. This year we will see if they hit it as hard
