OLF in NC

Postby cupped up » Thu Mar 01, 2007 5:56 pm

Are any of you aware of the outlying landing field the Navy has proposed to build in eastern NC (Washington and Beaufort counties)? For those of you who are not here's the scoop. The Navy proposes to build an outlying field (OLF) to practice aircraft carier landings. The catch is they want to build it near (aprox. 4 miles) Pocosin Lakes NWR. This area is a large wintering area for tundra swans, snow geese, and other waterfowl(this winter's count 100,000+). The Navy states that the waterfowl pose no threat to the aircraft or pilots and they can control flight paths of waterfowl by altering agricultural practices(no corn wheat or soybeans). The Navy has been urged by citizens and local politicans to look for a site with fewer environmental impacts, to no avail.Public hearings are scheduled March 19-April 4 in surounding areas, comments can be made online at the Navy's project website. All suport is welcome for the citizens of the surounding are. For more info. search google for OLF NC.

New Developments: Ducks Unlimited and the Navy's Outlying Landing Field (OLF)

In a statement yesterday (April 19th), Senator Dole opposed Site C for the OLF and said she will oppose funding for Site C (see news release below). This is a major development!

Yesterday afternoon DU sent a letter to the Senate Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee in advance of their hearing this morning. The same letter went to the House Mil. Con. Subcommittee

News Release from Senator Dole:

April 19th, 2007 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole today sent a letter to the Secretary of the Navy opposing the Navy's proposal to build an outlying landing field in Washington County and calling on the service to withdraw its recommendation for an OLF at that site.

"I appreciate the extensive discussions that we and our staffs have had over the last several weeks regarding the Navy's proposal for an outlying landing field in North Carolina," Dole wrote to Navy Secretary Donald Winter. "As I have conveyed to you, the Navy's proposal to build an OLF in Washington County is simply not feasible.

"In the best interests of both North Carolinians and the service, the Navy must withdraw its recommendation for an OLF in Washington County, and focus on operationally viable sites in North Carolina where environmental and other problems are very limited, and where residents are more receptive to such a facility and its potential for long-term economic development. I will oppose funding for an OLF in Washington County, as well as other potential sites that fail to meet these standards.

"I look forward to continuing to work with the Navy - and facilitating a dialogue with state and local officials and my colleagues in the North Carolina congressional delegation - to find a solution as quickly and efficiently as possible that will both benefit residents of North Carolina and provide pilots with the training that they require and deserve."
