Wood Duck Houses

Postby Schooly17 » Sat Dec 07, 2013 6:33 pm

I have access to 5 gallon pails with lids. I was wondering if anyone has heard of making wood duck houses out of them?

I have heard of it but you stand a chance of it getting too hot inside the pails. All of mine are wood and I have raised ducks in all of them for the last 22 years. They do have to be maintained or replaced some years but they are proven and work. Scrap lumber can be found in lots of places. They don't have to look pretty just functional.

I need to make some to hang in my Cypress Swamp. Wood Ducks hang out in one particular area all year. Researching size - are they single or multiple units - how large of a compartment - how high off the water? Any advice appreciated.

Single units only, and do not put too many too close together. A dominant hen will not let other hens nest after they have laid eggs. You will in turn find boxes with un-hatched eggs.

There is boat loads of information on the world wide web; hit up google.

I am sure the 5 gallon pails would work. You could possibly cut part of the bottom out and silicone wire mesh to create some ventilation.

Thanks - I self educated myself on the web. Went to a wood worker, 3 weeks ago, he's building me 6 boxes to start with. He just happens to have wood ducks in boxes he made, pond behind his house. I'll put them up (4 ft above high water mark) - be ready for next year.

Dave,
I'm sure you know, but please be sure to install a predator guard on your boxes. The nesting box is a death trap otherwise.

Here's a plan for the guard in case you don't have them:
