Is cleaning out a wood duck box a must for them to come back and nest there again? I have heard that this is true for some other types of birds and was wondering if the same held true for the woodies.
We have found unhatched eggs in some of the boxes we've put out. I think it's probally a good idea to at least check them. I don't think they will nest in a box that has last years eggs still in them.
I am thinking about buiding some boxes. The DU site says I should use cedar, is this the universal belief? I am going to put them in a cypress swamp. Will they nest in a cypress box?
Yes, they will nest in a cypress box. Ceder is recommended because it naturally doesn't rot as quick as some other woods.
