Before the days of digital son. Things have changed quite a bit in the last few years. Believe it or not, there was a time when us hunters just killed em and ate em. No internet forums...No Facebook...no online discussions about 27 pounders. There was nobody to show the damn picture to. Why the heck would I take it...

Plus...at the time I really believe the 20 pounder existed... 13.7 was nothing to get too worked up about.

DU has been regurgitating the same "greater canada goose" information for 25 years. My buddy is a biologist for the usfws. He has studied geese extensively. He has yet to see a verified specimen over 15 pounds. The 20 pounders just aren't around any more...there was a time when the breeding programs and relocation generated some 20 pound birds, but those are long gone.

I'd think a pampered pet or freak of nature more likely. When we were shooting the reintroduced "giant" variety in the late '70s and early '80s, everyone was killing "18-pounders," but 13lbs on a scale was huge.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Am I the only guy that frequents DHC all off season but when the season comes around I rarely check in? I really just use DHC to fend off depression until the season opens. LOL

No but I know the guy and he is legit. I don't think he would lie about the goose's weight but I'm sure he weighed it. Plus Tim and Hunter have hunted with him.

Every time I see someone has posted on this thread I jump on and read it wanting to see a 24 pound goose. Maybe I will wait for the I found a leperchan thread to start and keep checking that instead off this one. The leperchan will probably be found first.

It's not uncommon to see 24 pound leprechauns here in the corn fields of NC.

And BTW it's leprechaun not leperchan

Nope, must be estimated at 18 pounds....
Last night, I dreamed that I killed all the saggers, all the swaggers, and all of their duckface girlfriends...

It was called: The Yolocaust.

A. I don't see that bird on a scale.
B. That bird was shot in New Zealand, not here. Why is that important, because there are about 12 guys in the entire country that hunt waterfowl, and the Canadas are so thick they don't have limits on them, and can shoot unplugged guns. If there WAS going to be a 15+ lbs Canada goose, it would come from a place like that.

Just because Tim put up a story from the guy that took him hunting out there does not mean its true. Sorry to burst your bubble, but thats by far not the biggest goose I have seen killed and it is not 18 lbs.

Mayhem,
Thanks for the link. That looks like a big Ol bird. Not sure if it is truly 18 pounds though, just cuz I wasn't there. I do agree with the other guy who said if a 18 pounder did exist it would be in NZ.

No but I know the guy and he is legit.

So a kid who claims 13-16 pound geese are common in North Carolina says an 18-pounder is legit.

Sure.
