Help me decide on shells!

Postby BBK » Tue Oct 25, 2011 3:44 pm

I want you guys to help me decide what shell to shoot tomorrow. Going after 12-15lb giants, mostly pass shooting. Expected range 35-45 yards. All pattern pretty much the same, so just up to personal opinion now. I'm still learning this goose hunting stuff.

Remington Premier Hevi-Shot 3" 1 1/4 #2
Federal Premium Classic Steel 3" 1 3/8 #BBB
Kent Fasteel 3.5" 1 3/8 BB
Winchester Xpert 3" 1 1/4 #1
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

I would shoot Remington, Kent and then the Federal. I would save the Experts for Doves. Just my opinion.

If you can afford to replace them shoot the hevi shot.. There is simply no comparison in what you listed

If ya shoot em in the head any 2-BB size works. I prefer Federal and Winchester personally but thats me. If you have the money, blackcloud 3.5" 2's are deadly. Any 3.5" shell for that range would be added knock down power, but costs more.

Hevi Shot all the way...

Nothing else you listed can even come close to the knock down power of Hevi Shot. It amazes me every year the power these shells carry.

45 yards is too far to count on head and neck hits. If you're willing to spend the bucks, Hevishot no. 2's is the best choice. I prefer steel BBB's, but want them going at least 1450 fps. at the muzzle. I doubt your 3" load of 1 3/8 oz. will do that. As a second choice to the Hevishot, of the loads you mentioned, I'd use the Kent 3.5" 1 3/8 oz. load of BB's.

When you break it down it's very affordable... I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the times I've been hunting honkers and watched someone pull up on em with XYZ steel and boom..boom..booom.. barely pull a feather. Switch over to Heavy Metal or Hevi Shot and boom... bird...boom...bird.

So when you do the math in the long run youll save money.
