New to Goose Hunting

Postby WTHunter » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:36 am

Hey guys, looking for a little advice here.
I just got into goose hunting, I live on a major flyway in the Texas Panhandle. I'm looking for advice on decoys, calls, blinds ect. The only catch is I am on a college budget, so I'm looking for some cheaper end things to get started with. Ive only been calling with other buddies that have equipment but I have a alot of feeding ground to hunt and want to get out on my own. The only thing I have is the QuackHead Goozilla.
Thanks in advance for the help!
Looking forward to being an active member in the forum!

Look for some used silhouettes, they work good and sometimes you can find them cheap.

Practice your calling until you are very good. Let people hear you call, then you will get invites.

Use your time for other people that don't have time

Spend a lot of time scouting. And once you find the X and get permission, let a few people with all the gear know and set up a hunt. This worked well for me while in college. I found where the birds are, made a few friends that had trailers full of deeks but not much time to scout. Worked out great. I learned a lot too.

Thanks for the tips guys. Ive gotten good enough at calling already that I was calling at the park and a guy pulled up and wanted to take me! I also ordered a layout blind from Rodger's so its slowly but surely coming together!

The other posters idea about scouting is a good idea, too. If you find someone with a nice spread and you call them up and say I found the X and have permission, do you want to go? you are going to become part of a crew...

Im a college kid and was in your shoes last year.. I got as many of my buddies as i could started our group SQUAWK and we all put in $100 twice a yr for deeks. We started out with 15 yr old silouettes and shells from my step dad and no blinds. now we all have blinds calls 2 dozen ghg fbs and almost 70 duck floaters. Strength is in numbers drag your close buddies out theyl get just as addicted as the rest of us are.
