how much does the wind matter

Postby renegadeduck » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:23 am

I was debating on how to set me dekes up and was going to set em up so the birds wood land into the wind for obvious reasons my question is how slow does the wind have to be blowing for geese to not worry about it. i have had cases when the wind is in the 5 to 10s and the geese landed without paying any attension to the wind. so does the wind have to be blowing harder then 10 or will they still land into it if its less then 5?

9 times out of 10 a goose on the ground will face into the wind for the most part. Place the decoys so that you can land them where you want. Block off areas with decoys you dont want them landing on and leave holes where you do. You almost have to plan to have them landing into the wind as they do the majority of the time, and remember that they dont like to fly low over a decoy when they are landing.

I just took a bunch of pictures of some content, feeding geese and I saw almost as many birds facing into and perpendicular to the wind than there were birds facing into the wind. It'll differ from early/regular-late season. In my experience, most birds when resting in the extreme cold/snow will put their breast into the wind to keep the wind crom getting up under their feathers and robbing away body heat but any other time, when all the birds are facing into the wind, they usually have their heads up and are getting ready to bug out as something just spooked them.

X2. As a rule they do feed/face the wind, they are big ol birds so the play the wind as much as possible.
