Goose ID

Postby Mike657 » Mon Dec 23, 2013 3:35 am

I hunt here in northern illinois where I mainly shoot only big geese from 11 to 15 LBs. Today I shot a Canada in my ice hole and it was about 9-10LBs, and it also had a white ring where his neck and breast start. I've shot many geese and never have really wondered abou the ring. Does anyone have an idea what subspeicies he might be?
Good Luck in the field-Mike.

This.

And... I'll second the 15 pounders! LOL!! We shot 12 honkers last Thursday and 5 of them had white rings around their neck bases.

I thought Aleutians and cacklers were the only ones with white neck collars?

I'd love to see a picture. Many contests have been run to find the mythical 15lb goose. I think it's only been won once, and the brd had a 72+" wingspan

What I meant by geese 11-15 pounds was that they can range from that size. I dont shoot two 15LBers every day :lol3: .

We only shot one 15 pounder this year on opening day. It was a pair of resident birds. the female was 14LBs and banded. It was banded at the golf coarse by my house  ;so there are contests for a 15LB goose? Thanks for the replys-mike.

You will get birds with leucistic or melanistic feathers, that produce white blotches on wings, breasts and white rings at the base of the neck at the transition from the neck to the body. We get them here all the time.

Here in Kansas I shoot everything from 4 pound cacks to 14 pound honkers and I have noticed more and more of the big honkers are having the same distinctive white ring around their neck that the cacks do. I even shot a few that had a white uni brow

Exactly. If it was much smaller, it would be a Richardson's.
