Shrink Your Spread!!

Postby bigblue0827 » Thu Jan 09, 2014 7:22 am

We were noticing the geese very decoy shy and tough to finish this year. Everything looked perfect to us, but not the geese. We suspected they were used to seeing 80 - 100 decoy spreads, figuring if that is all we can fit in the trailer / afford then most of the other guys were running around the same numbers. The last three hunts we have used between 1 and 3 dozen, backed the blinds off and set up for crossing shots and are back to landing birds.

Sooooo.... just a tip for anyone else as frustrated as we were this year, CHANGE THINGS UP!

I've noticed just keeping the blinds out of the decoys does a huge number for getting birds to work.

We shot the heck out of Canadas Saturday and only used 7 decoys, set up in 3 family groups 50 yards apart

Blinds on the crossing shot is how I always set even with ducks I hate being in the landing line of where birds are wanting to land. Plus set up farther off I like to be 25 yds from the landing hole mkesd every difference in late season

Since January of 1996 most of my hunts have involved less than a dozen goose decoys. The last week of a 90 day goose season in January of 96 I killed 11 geese (2 bird limit) in 7 days with 2 Big Foots in a public field on Crab Orchard NWR. My spread since then is usually 3-11 decoys on the water and 2-12 decoys in the field. I always put my layout off to the side 15-25 yards for crossing shots in the field. I have found that decoy shy birds are not afraid of small spreads. I run little spreads from early season thru January and I shoot my birds in the decoys at 15-25 yards.

This past Sunday I killed my 2 birds with 5 Big Foots right in the decoys. It took me longer to hike in and set up than to shoot my birds.

^Like your style. Bascially what I do, most I like to run is two dozen unless I'm in an obvious traffic field. I like to look like the first flock that got there on an x.

We shot another 2 man limit this morning with the same 7 decoys, luckily the wind was out of the same direction that it was before and the field hadn't been hunted all week. Also the pond was partially open this morning so that may have helped too

I hunted a public land field this Saturday over 18 flocked head shells, with me hiding in a hedgerow and had no problem decoying geese. I started out with my layout blind partially in the hedgerow and they were picking me right out. I hid the blind and worked them from the brush and had a good shoot even though I had a bad day shooting wise.

When birds get smart I run a spread of 3 feeders, 2 actives and one sentry. Put the blinds 20 yards away and they eat it up every time.

yes i actually did. i noticed they didnt want to land with my normal spread even when in the field they want to be in. instead they would land off to the side. i ended up watching them the next morning and watched them land with a single then off to the side of the first group of 18 in the field. so i figured if they would land with one real bird then why not one full body.

We have shot well over 100 birds this year over 8 big feet! We were on the x most of the time which always helps, when they got picky we either left only one guy in the dekes or nobody! Several days when they would not finish we picked the dekes and moved to another spot in the field and had immediate results, super easy moving only 8 big feet and quick!

I've done both...small spreads of 2-3 dozen...but when I'm hunting around the braidwood area here in illinois which gets tons of pressure, I like to combine spreads with buddies and run about 300 full bodies.
