22 years of waterfowl hunting, got my first band

Postby Cajun1085 » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:20 am

It has been a long wait, but finely got my band. Me and a good buddy were hunting the upper Potomac River without much action for day. We had a pair come flying up river without even giving our spread a look. We started aggressively calling and at about 200 yards out, they turned on a dime and came in cupped. I picked the right bird and my buddy picked up on the left. Both birds ended up on the water and we both went home with Jewelry. It was my first band ever and my buddies first goose band. Couldnt be more happy. They were banded this year a few counties way.

I had a buddy shoot his first last weekend also, except this is only his second year hunting. He was pumped of course and couldn't stop talking about getting his next one... I told him not to hold his breath.

Oh yeah, and congrats!

22 years, huh? I call that beginner's luck. It took me 46 years. Lol! Congratulations, and hopefully many more, will come your way. The sure aren't coming my way!

My best band story was when I was hunting with a friend who had only been shooting for his second year and was already complaining that he hadn't gotten a band. I had about 8 at that time in 20 years of hunting and I told him that his day will come. A pair of pintails came in, I fired and dropped one, he fired and whiffed. I walked over to find that the Bull Sprig was banded, but when I looked down, there was a frozen black duck in the ice.....yup.....banded....
I walked back and he just about choked.....

Congrats on the band, Ive shot one in 42 years. About 15 years ago there was a young co worker of mine that wanted to go goose hunting with us. He had never hunted ducks or geese before and wouldn't you know it, on the first pull of the trigger, he shoots a 11 pounder with a band.

I know this started months ago but here's a sad story to add to it. A friend who hunted without a dog dropped a drake mallard in river current and too deep to wade out to get. He watched a belly up bird kicking his legs with a band on one float away.

Got my first band on the 3rd bird I ever shot, another 2 in the 10 years that followed and 1 in the past 8 years. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever shoot another.

I don't believe it was my very first band, as I'd got a Redhead in Tule Lake that was banded, but my very first of two geese with bands was a Tule Goose at Sacramento Refuge in the mid-late '60s.
At the time, I believe the Warden at the check stand said the total estimated population of Tule geese to be just under 3000.
Even today, the population is said to be only 7,500

The band on this bird was already worn as thin as paper on one side and about as thick as a nickle on the other side.
So the words Fall and Autumn are not to be capitalized?

I shot a Snow goose that dodged a lot of hunters BB's to get into our area , it had flown some 3000 miles
to end its migration for the little fella . It was almost a tear-jerk-er to find out that it had flown all this way from the
Nunavut river region to the Grasslands of the San Joaquin Valley . I gave this band to my Grandson so he could write a story
for a school project , showing the band and report of where this little goose was banded . My Grandson finished the story
with a highlight of , my Grandpa saved this little goose from having to fly all the way back to the Northeast Territories
of Canada !

Its so crazy the band distribution in this hobby. Im in CT and some seasons i have shot 20 bands, i never go without at least one band in a season. But saying that 80% are local birds. I feel spoiled compared to others. Not bragging, just saying. One early season hunt two years ago me and my 2 buds put down 12 birds out of a group that committed, 11 were banded....3 miles from where we got them, Canada's. Got a band this year off a canada that i could only read two numbers, sent to the government to acid etch, still waiting on it

By the look of 'em having so little wear on 'em, I'm thinking they still had the 'New Band Smell' too!
Not many miles on those.

FS

Who cares if they are 1 day old or 15 years old a BAND IS A BAND and I am sure you would not keep it either way..

Sometimes they "look" old but are not and sometimes they "look" new and are old....

Congrats on any band... :scooter:

Could well be that goose hunting in the Ohio Valley when residents were being introduced and it seemed every third one banded is why I don't keep them. Just made them seem like used birds that someone else has already had his hands on.

Had I been brought on down here, where my parties shot over 1,100 birds last season with nary a band in the bunch, my attitude might differ...
