Dehydrator vent... open or closed???

Postby Jim1648 » Sun Sep 27, 2009 6:53 pm

Gonna make some goose jerky tommorow in a food dehydrator. Does anyone know what I should do with the vent on top?? Open, closed, half open. I'm at a loss. Thanks, Jim

Open, you need to let the moisture vent out. Most important thing is to keep the temperature right.

I was told by a chef that dehydrators are not good for drying, the heat used will shorten the shelf life. I use a regular square box fan, ambient air from the house (70-72 degrees) and a stack of 20" x 20" air filters for a household A/C...and 2 bungee cords to hold the filters on the fan...just sandwich the jerky on the filters and stack...blow air through them for 24 hours and then preserve in a glass jar with one of those silica packs...
