At the risk of suffering from the butt end of some obvious jokes, I like anchovies. I am toying with the idea of making my own out of ... I'm not sure what, but living on the mid-Atlantic coast, I figure I can find a legitimate substitute. Maybe silversides or cigar minnows would work. Has anyone ever heard of or tried something liks this?

In Europe, this is a very common practice. I would look at some international cookbooks and see how they do it. I've seen all sorts of "bait" eaten. A very popular dish from Spain is fried whitebait. aka scaled sardines.
