2010 Model Outboards...

Postby Curly » Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:01 pm

Wondering if anyone on here is running any new outboards from like a 09 up... i have a 1648 all welded mod v and was looking to put a 30hp on it. I have been looking at the Tohatsu's, but I found out that in a Mercury, from a 30 hp down is a Tohatsu cause they are contracted out to make them, they just have the Merc. decal. Curious to see what everyones preference is. Maybe a Yamaha, Johnson/Evinrude, Honda, Suzuki??? Also, what kind of speeds am I looking at with an empty boat...? Thanks for any Feedback...

I can get 25mph in my 16ft Lund Alaskan (deep vee) with me and my dog with a '98 30hp yamaha, so you should expect at least 27, most likely more.

When I do get a new outboard I'm sticking with Yamaha. I'm not a big fan of Merc's when it comes to their smaller outboards, the ones I've seen are bulky and heavy

Just sold my 2005 1675 polar kraft and powered it with a 2009 mercury 40hp 4 stroke and was pushing 32-35 depending on weight. Really liked the motor so the new boat being a 2010 1860 roughneck will be powered by a 2010 mercury 50hp 4 stroke. On the 1675 when I first purchased it I had a 18hp tohatzu put on. Also a great running motor.

Don't be afraid of the Tohatsu, they make a good tough motor. Maybe not as smooth or quiet as the Yamaha, but it won't quit on you either, and if you go that route, buy a branded Tohatsu, it will most likely be cheaper then the same motor painted black.

Just bought a new Yamaha 90TLR-it's going on a 2070Mod-V Saturday. Friend is running the same unit - good lord are they awesome.

I'm partial- but if I was buying a new motor, it would be a "ricer" of one flavor or the other. Honda has a standard 5 year warranty, Yamaha a 3 year (but is offering 5 year now to move units toward season end)

If you want to know how your boat will perform - most of the Mfg's have links to performance bulletins on their site. You can search for a hull style/spec's similar to your's and it will give you the results of the Mfg's tests. For example, I couldn't find a bulletin on Yammy's site for an 2070 Mod-V, but did find one for an 1872. With a 13x19 prop, I know I can expect top end in the low to mid 40's, 13.5x17 more like Mid-Hi 30's.

Couldn't find a Yamaha bulletin for a 1648 - but here is one for a 16 Mod-V with a 70" beam - I'll bet you're darn close to these hull specs.

Another rule of thumb - you should be running at least 75% of your rated horsepower.
The down side to being better than everyone else is that people tend to assume you're pretentious.

regarding the comments about tohatsu and merc 30hp being identical except the decal. the powerheads are the same, but mercs shift is on the handle/throttle. the tohatsu/nissan has a separate external shifter. not a big deal, but i lke the shift in the twist grip/throttle/handle. also, look for a brand that has trim and tilt...i would not own a motor without it. i have the 30 hp merc...

30 hp MERC long shaft electric tiller power trim.
WHat I like: Fuel injection, high idle mechanism and it comes standard with full manual start trim in case the battery is dead you can start it easily, I've done this a few times, once when my battery was stolen and a few times when the bilge pump killed the battery. SO even though it is an electric start motor you can start it with the STANDARD EQUIPMENT full manual start pull cord even without any battery.
I have installed a SOLAS 10 x 10 stainless prop from my old Honda 30 and I get 24 mph on a SSV-18 Lund. No listings but it works.

WHat I don't like: is the tiller shift/throttle mechanism, it's a great idea but you have to wait for the engine to idle before trying to shift to a reversing direction and the 4 stroke seems to take forever to drop the RPM's. The older 2 strokes seemed to work a lot better in this regard IMO.
