Do I need to put paint on after the primer?

Postby ncduckdoc » Wed Jun 29, 2011 7:08 pm

Just primed a few places on the boat floor around the ribs. Had some welding done in about 10 places where there were stress cracks. Do I need to put paint on top of the primer or can I leave it with just primer and put the floor back in? Nobody will see the painted areas. Is the primer durable enough on its on? Thanks

The primer will be just fine by it's self.... No point in wasting the paint if your not going to benefit from it.

primer is better that bare metal but I've been told that primer actually "sucks up" moisture. so for the little effort it would take I'd hit it with a quick coat with a rattle can. my .02 cents

Ture point, but guess it depend's on the quality of primer used. If he used a primer specific for metal, they have moisutre resisting quality's now and can be used by it's self....

it all depends on what primer u used some wont hold up at all with out paint over them for the time it will take to put a few coats on with a rattle can it wont hurt.

Primer sticks to bare metal, paint does not.
Paint (topcoat) is a weatherproof coating, primer is not.

I would prime and topcoat.

Nailed it.

If primer were good enough, we would just tint it the top coat color and not worry about a top coat.

Primer has no UV protection. Paint does.

Have you looked at Duralux Aluminum Boat Paint? It's paint and primer in one. I have used the Green on my last two boats and it's great! This is my newest boat after two hard hunting seasons.
