new boat... 1552

Postby fowllife08 » Sat May 25, 2013 6:33 pm

Been a little minute since I've been on this site. After building both the longtail and surface drive. Which are both gone. I sold the surface drive and been busy ever since looking for something to start from scratch, well I found this boat. Its an ol 1552. I'm not sure of mfg because its from the 70s. I picked it up for 1000$ for boat and trailer. Heck I think it was a good deal. And now its time to.make it my own, so where to start? The paints old, I know I will have to redo it. What kinda stencils? The floor is double bottom so I will deffinatly be going with hydro turf on the bottom. What else? Any suggestiins? I put my little 25 on it for now for fishing... runs 32 with me and loaded down ice chest, fishin gear. I plan to put three pedastles to allow three guys to hunt it.

Thanks for the reply, yeh my buddy has that motor on a 1648 and that thing gets it. Other than the reverse though what puts it over the others? I haven't priced them but im about 40 minutes from thwm and wouldn't mind going check em out.

What kinda 25 you running? I would think you would be hard pressed to see those speeds on that boat.

No other brand offers the Subaru w/ fuel injection, the Subaru on the GTR25 is really 28hp, according to the Subaru website. I painstakingly looked at all the manufactures and Gator Tail always came out on top for reliability, speed, and all around customer service. They have a lifetime warranty on the belt system, and a pretty good overall warranty as well.

I could be wrong, just seems like a good size boat. I have a 25 merc on a 1448 and empty I am lucky to see 30 mph.

Had a crack in the front of the boat, fish plated it and put a 'bumper' 2 1/ 2" pipe. Waiting on speakers to fill the holes and have doors cut out to be welded in for the storage boxes.

Cool boat. Its interesting that a boat made in the 1970s has a hunt deck. I thought hunt decks were a more recent feature.

I thought the same thing when I got it, I think maybe it was modified. Doesn't bother me, just an added feature haha.

Got the hydro turf in today. Looks good. Gonna cut it and glue it in tomorrow with the speakers as well. I also picked up all the bimini fittings to do the blind. I thought about the conduit by I'm gonna run aluminum pipe. The conduit will need to be spliced and because of that it will sag

Got the turf in yesterday. Gonna build the blind this weekend. It's coming along, slowly yet surely.

cool boat is it all welded? If so you got a hell of deal open layout, hunt deck, small casting deck up front I like it. I put long access door on one of the sides to use make it into a rod/gun box.
Red neck engineering- If ya can't fix it with duck tape, bailing wire, zip ties, and JB weld well than it can't be fixed.

If it moves and it aint suppose to duck tape it. If doesn't move and its suppose to put WD-40 on it.
